This is a Netflix original Nigerian movie. It is the first Nigerian young adult drama on Netflix.
Far from home is about the struggles of an ambitious teen from a poor background who is determined to fulfil his artistic dream despite all odds. However, things turn quite dangerous as he finds himself in a rich and influential environment.
For the first time I would say that this movie met most of the expectations and standards that were anticipated by the viewers and for the first time, I compared a Nollywood film to a foreign film, The Elite, which is also a Netflix young adult film.
The cinematography, from the shot angles to the picture quality, was great. I mean, you cannot expect anything less from a Netflix original. Moreso, the casts. They did an amazing job; from the new faces to the Nollywood veterans gave an A+ acting.
Although I would say, some scenes were quite annoying, I mean, why would Ishaya’s mom (Patricia- Funke Akindele) use her son’s money like it was hers, then tell him the remaining is for their feeding? As if it is not their job to provide for their children. Granted the dad was sick and needed help, but at least giving him back the change and at least being a bit thankful would not have been so bad.
And to think that Rahila (Tomi Ojo) feels that her brother stole her dreams was on so many levels of wrong… I mean, the dude asked her if she would go for it, but she refused to honourably cheat her way into the school… then go fight it the honest way girl rather than feel betrayed.
Also, the lengths to which Ishaya (Mike Afolarin) moved from waiter to drug dealer, to kidnapper was just superfast and too much for a teenage boy in high school, but…what can I say? Shit happens.
Overall, the scenes were super engaging. It is a film that will keep you glued to the screen for hours until it’s finished. It has a mix of drama, romance, dope action, thriller, and suspense! Everything is packed in one!!
I would gladly rate it an 11 out of 10, yes! You heard me!
