Hellcat is a 2019 movie that is about a newly married couple; Liz (Matilda Obaseki) and Ochukwu (Mofe Duncan) who are already experiencing issues in their marriage.
Nevertheless, I would commend the writer for reversing the role of the abuser and the abused. But, on this side of the world, women are majorly the victims of abuse. Meanwhile, not disputing the fact that women can be abusers in relationships, like the recent court case between two American celebrities; Amber Heard and Johnny Depp of which the wife was the abuser.
In situations of abused relationships, the question that always runs through people’s minds is why the abused always stick around…As the movie progressed, it became exasperating which is somewhat a good feeling that keeps a viewer glued to the screen with the want to see the end.
Verbal abuse could be understood but allowing it to reach the point of physical hurt, especially with the physique of the abused who looked like he could easily overpower the abuser or just send her away in the classic African way kinda made the movie feel very unreal, but I guess, him being the one to leave the house when he almost got murdered by the wife is still a welcoming sight.
Furthermore, the progression of the move was on average. At a time one could feel immense frustration towards the victim, and anger towards the abuser which is a normal feeling. But at some point, you are like “this is super unreal”. There was an in and out of emotions where one couldn’t even place if Liz had changed or not, not until she gave her classic backstory of her mum’s abuse, but If that is how the writer wanted the viewers to feel, then her aim was a success.
The acting was adequate. The lead characters did a good job, however, I wouldn’t say the same for Liz’s co-workers.
I wouldn’t forget to mention Liz’s costume. Her Ankara outfit throughout the movie was nice. I would give Kudos to the wardrobe manager. However, the sound, picture, and video quality were average. The predictability of the movie would be a three out of five. Overall, Hellcat is an average Nollywood home video that families should watch and be educated about abuse.
