Miller’s Girl: An Unconventional Romance!
Miller’s Girl is a movie about a sullen high school girl- Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) who is an aspiring writer and her teacher- Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman), a former writer as well. They have the same sensual taste in literature which makes Cairo Sweet interested in Miller and wants to explore her sexuality. However, there is a turn of events as Mr. Miller realizes himself and rejects her advances.
It’s a 2024 film directed by Jade Halley.
‘Miller’s Girl’ gives a somewhat dark ethereal feeling while displaying a controversial story, which sadly was not portrayed controversial enough!
Unlike other movies that focus more on the characters and their relationships with little or no attention to their work, this film engages the viewers in the characters’ art. As I watched the movie I was drawn into a writer’s or a poet’s space. However, Cairo as a student was absent.
However, I didn’t quite understand the ending. According to Cairo’s writing, was Miller’s presence at the steps of the hall a brave move to accept his complicity or deny it? When he didn’t respond to his friend’s question about his feelings towards Cairo Sweet… did that mean Mr. Miller loved Cairo Sweet and was at the gate to admit that? In the end, was this love or romance a possible one?
The vague ending left me with several unanswered questions, adding an unpredictable feel.
In summary, Miller’s Girl is an unconventional romance with a combination of sensuality, drama, friendship and controversy.
It’s a fair watch.
