THE NEW NORMAL is a classy Nigerian movie. It tells the story of how five families are faced with various financial, psychological, emotional and physical problems, and how they all find ways to cope with the situation, hence accepting their new normal.

I can say that I was happy to stumble on this movie. It is not every day you get to see a movie that is not focused on just a single protagonist with other characters as secondary and insignificant as it gets. rather, this film expresses equal interests and focuses on all five families capturing the major problems they face and its well-packed with powerful casts.

At the beginning of the movie, it captures a scene where one of their friends, Jadesola (Mercy Johnson -Okojie) was treated as an outcast in Nike’s (Enado Odige) anniversary dinner, with that kind of beginning, one would think that the movie will be focused on the circumstances that caused the estranged relationship between them, but somehow, they surprised us with entirely different content, kudos to the Tunde Babalola for the amazing script.

In addition, the movie also brings in a tinge of a different sexuality other than the enforced norm in the country, not to mention that the movie is also filled with scenes that will get some laughs out of you. It is a perfect blend of comedy amidst the chaos in their lives, kudos to the director, Teniola Olatoni.

Despite the good cinematography and production by the Sourmash production studio, there is a little protest about the poor face beat on Jadesola’s face in some scenes which didn’t do justice to her character. Also, the hostility and unfriendliness that was dished out to Jade just because she is the single one in the group were a bit extreme, it made it seem a bit unrealistic, but then again, it is the new normal.

Overall, I would say that the movie encapsulates, drama, comedy, heartbreak, and romance while maintaining some sense of reality in it. It bags a total of 8/10 in my rating.

It is a perfect movie for everyone to watch, as it shows the struggles of marriage and life in general, and I would gladly encourage you to get it, as you surely will have a good time!
